SpinacH: Alphalipoic acid

Lipoic acid is crucial for cellular respiration and acts as a co-factor in the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate in the mitochondria of the cells. There it absorbs chemical components such as hydrogen or acyl groups and makes them available for the reactions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during cellular respiration can damage cell structures, but antioxidants play an important role in controlling these ROS. Lipoic acid itself can act as an anti- oxidant or supply other antioxidants with electrons to keep them functional.
